AMA Annual 2019

I’m sitting at my gate in the airport, and despite trying my hardest to reflect over the past couple of days, it is difficult to put my thoughts into words. But to start:

Oh, what a week it has been.

The preparation leading up to and during this conference has been challenging. From juggling multiple hats (would not recommend), to witnessing how strategy was utilized, to engaging with our Medical Student Section and House in thoughtful dialogue about health policy, I have learned so much. We continue to move the needle on single-payer, affirm that health in all its forms is a basic human right, support the right of transgender and non-binary individuals to change government documents in accordance to their gender identity, eliminate the term “mental retardation” in clinical settings, and support legislation allowing mature minors to consent to vaccinations. As I enter this meeting knowing that I would transition towards another position, I have become acutely aware that my tenure at the AMA is due solely to the mentorship of so many role models.

To my Hopkins family and MedChi, The Maryland State Medical Society: Thank you for continuing to encourage my involvement in organized medicine, for your mentorship, and for always welcoming me to your health policy discussions.

To my Region 6 GC family (most notably D.C., R.A.): I would not have survived this year without you. Thank you for always making me laugh, for listening to me vent, for inspiring me to always do better.

To K.C.: thank you for being the best partner-in-crime as we stand there ablaze together. Looking forwarding to seeing you rock it at Interim!

To K.M.: Thanks for welcoming me to the Council and the karaoke caucus, and making the transition so much smoother! I have big shoes to fill. I’m sure we’ll be in touch.

To K.D.: imagine my surprise when I step into my first MSS Assembly and seeing you on the dais as part of the RefCom! Thank you so much for being a fun CASE Co-Instructor, for lending an ear when I call seeking advice, for encouraging me to re-apply to standing and convention committees (third time’s the charm!), and for always keeping it real.

To J.L.: thank you for…everything. For encouraging me to find my voice, for advocating on my behalf, and for mentoring me throughout the duration of my involvement in organized medicine. I don’t think you realize the influence you had on on my decision to stay involved, and my trajectory within the AMA. You’ve always provided insight that inspired me to think more deeply about the processes and potential actions within the organization, and I am so grateful.
