PAULINE HUYNH

Visiting my Pre-Health advisor always makes me nervous.

Yesterday, I found out that, yes, the MCAT does test on molecular biology. Which means I can’t just enroll in Ochem and Physics, but would also have to make room for Mol Bio. That said, it also tests on the electricity/magnetism aspect of physics, so I have to take it before taking the MCAT.

Which leaves:

  1. Triple science: ochem, mol bio, physics. I had originally planned to take stats, too LOL. Fuuuuuuuuuuuu. Triple labs are a bad idea. A very bad idea. Despite the fact that they are 4 units each, these are major 4 units. If I end up with this, I…I might switch stats to evolution, ecology, and culture? Or maybe a BS GE course LOL I DUNNOOOOOOO
  2. Summer class. JCs don’t offer mol bio, and physics courses aren’t available in the timeline I need LOLFUUUUUUU. I need to be back to school by August 3rd, but summer classes don’t end until August 11. I tried looking at other 4 years. One of the cheaper 4-year colleges offers Mol Bio within the time frame, BUT NO LAB FUUUUUUUUUUUU. Not transferable =_______= Only option would be USC summer school, which is so expensive…
  3. Self-studying Mol Bio and taking the MCAT after sophomore year anyway, by doubling up on Ochem and Physics. Let’s have Pauline shoot herself in the foot!
  4. Gap Year: be a normal human being, the new MCAT (…not ideal) after junior year, take a gap year and bum around do research or apply for the Fulbright (fat chance). That would mean studying extra stuff, like stats, biochem, psych, and sociology.

My Pre-Health advisor pretty much warned me that

  1. I’d be socially dead
  2. the chances of me taking the 2014 MCAT are slim to none, because all the seniors, juniors, and sophomores will be vying to take it, and seats will go out immediately
  3. I’m part of the first class that’s supposed to take the new MCAT. The fact that I scramble to take it before my time is a GIANT red flag. That would be an almost-guaranteed question on the interview.
